Lamuri Nero d’Avola Sicilia- 2010

Lamuri Nero d'Avola 2010Lamuri, which stands for “Love” in Sicilian dialect, is a 100% Nero d’Avola wine produced by the Tasca d’Almerita winery in Sicily.

The Nero d’Avola grapes come from 10-15 year old vines that are planted in sandy soils and combined with the local micro-climate gives this Lamuri its unique character. The wine is dark ruby-red in color and is medium-bodied. Lush ripe blackberry and cherry flavors combined with hints of smoke and vanilla, soft tannins and beautiful acidity result in a excellent Italian wine.

Great value wine that can be enjoyed on its own or with your favorite pasta dishes. Lamuri received 87 points from the Wine Enthusiast and 91 points from The Wine Advocate.

Produced and bottled by Tasca d’Almerita, Sclafani Bagni, Sicily, Italy.

Pio Cesare Dolcetto d’Alba 2011

The Pio Cesare winery near Alba in Italy’s Piedmont region was founded in 1881 and now his great-grandson Pio Boffa, continues the tradition of high quality viticulture and innovative wine making.

Dolcetto is a dark red grape variety primarily grown in the Piedmont area in Nort-West Italy. While the name would imply sweetness, most Dolcetto are dry. Dolcetto is often an “early-to market” wine and should be consumed within 1-2 years after release.

Pio Cesare Dolcetto d’Alba 2011 has a nice fruity fragrance, is light ruby red in color and has black cherry flavor with subtle hints of pepper and black currant. It is a fairly dry red with smooth finish. Since the dolcetto is considered “an every day grape“, it is priced at the low end of Pio Cesare’s line of wines. But at $19 a bottle, there is plenty of quality to be had. The Wine Spectator gave it 88 points.

Fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks.

Pairs well with: Sartori Bellavitano Balsamic cheese (available at WholeFoods) – the nutty flavor of the cheese goes well with this Dolcetto.

Produced and bottled by Pio Cesare Winery, Alba, Italy.

Imported by Pio Imports, North Wales, PA.

Costera Argiolas 2010

Argiolas Costera 2010The 2010 Costera is a wonderful Sardinian wine from Argiolas and was given 90 points by The Wine Advocate.

It is produced from Grenache (Cannonau) grapes, which give this wine its dark ruby red color and full body.

The 2010 Costera has a nicely structured flavor profile of dark cherries and plum with spices and licorice. This wine has a nice round mouth feel with decent tannin structure, which makes this wine go well with steaks and lamb. This is an excellent Italian wine at this price.

Produced by Argiolas, Sardinia, Italy.

Imported by: Winebow Inc., NYC, NY.
