Between all the cheap mass-produced Malbecs, I was pleasantly surprised to find this 2010 Malbec from the Catena vineyards.
The Catena estate is family operated and this 2010 Malbec is a blend of 4 different vineyards at different altitudes, which together with strong sunshine and cool nights, gives this Malbec its unique character.
This is a full-bodied Malbec with dark purple color, rich blackberry and plum fruit with notes of spice, leather and cinnamon. This wine also has some nice minerality and fairly strong tannins, but a long and smooth finish. The Catena Malbec would be an excellent wine to have with grilled meats. The Wine Spectator gave it 91 points.
Vinted and bottled by Bodega Catena Zapata, Argentina.
